The market for video game adaptations is a bit rough out there. The scale generally goes from the infamous E.T. on the Atari, often ranked as the worst video game of all time, to gems like GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 or even the Lego Star Wars series. The fact is that its generally easy to make a movie into a video game, sell it solely based on its star power, and put virtually no effort into the actual game.
Although I’d like to say the tide is turning completely, I don’t believe that will ever be the case – there will always be a movie adapted to a game that is absolutely terrible. Luckily, Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension continues a positive legacy by being a great, fun-filled adventure. It isn’t exactly a challenge and doesn’t completely rework any video game design theories, but it holds up well on its own and it wholly enjoyable for what it is.
Travel Across Dimensions
If you’re expecting something that will keep you emotionally invested for any reason, I highly suggest you look elsewhere. This Phineas and Ferb title never pretends to be anything more than a fun, fast-paced kids game that is meant to be a good time. The story is alright, but stays true to the themes of the show as they are pitted against an alternate dimension version of Dr. Doofenshmirtz. No crazy gimmicks or plot developments. No emotional catharsis. Just good fun which reigns in the feel of the show extremely well.
The game is obviously still enjoyable to anyone of any age, but it shouldn’t be surprising that this is geared towards younger audiences. Regardless, the animation, dialogue, and sound design personify the show at every turn. There’s no mistaking that this game was heavily influenced by the creators of the show – sometimes, you can sadly tell when this isn’t the case (Harr Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2 come to mind). I feel that this choice by the developers, recognizing what they were really working with, helped make this game feel whole, complete, and a work of love. Everything about the levels, environment, and characters is likable in the same way that the show is.
Save the Multiverse
Surprisingly, the actual gameplay holds up pretty well for this game too. There are six dimensions to explore while playing as Phineas and Ferb while utilizing various power ups. The ability to switch between the two, and the platforming design of each level, is heavily reminiscent of the LEGO series of games, particularly LEGO Star Wars as noted before. There’s a variety of puzzles, all of which are nothing complex, but fun all the same. There are also sections of the game where you’ll be flying high in the sky and shooting down an army of enemy robots.
The cooperative gameplay truly lends itself to these sections as they become even more fun to play with a friend. Finally, there are 6 bosses in the game, which I won’t spoil. They put up a decent challenge, but only to a certain extent (especially if you aren’t young or have experience with coop games like this). Each aspect of this journey is pure fun and was a blast to play through.
This is a great game if you’re looking for a casual, fun, and zany experience that’s as true to the show as it gets. It may not appeal to older audiences, but anyone can have a great time playing.
