The model 1100 holds the record for the most shells fired out of an semi auto shotgun without malfunction or cleaning, set in 1978 with a record of over 24,000 rounds fired.

With a title like that, what is not to love about Remington's 1100? This may explain why it has remained popular among bird hunters, Skeet shooters, and Trap Shooters since its introduction in 1963 through today.

Model 1100 History

The evolution of this shotgun started with the design of the Remington model 11-48, then the Model 58s and the 878s.

The original version of the Remington 1100 shotgun came out only in the 12 gauge in 1963, followed by the 16 gauge and 20 gauge in 1964, and finally the .410 gauge Remington 1100 in 1969. In 1970 a matched set came out in .410 gauge and 28 gauge.

Remington Model 11 Serial Number Dates

Remington does not use Serial Number manufacture dates. Instead, they have date codes stamped in front of the receiver on the barrel. Here's a chart that I cobbled together from information out on the internet that explains how to read the numbers (large images): Based off this information, my first Remington Model 591 was manufactured June - 1971. The following serial number information is for Remingtion firearms manufactured after 1921. Remingtons manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture. The following letters correspond to the months of the year, for example B=January, L= February and so on.

I don't claim to be an expert, but all of the Remington 'Model 11' 12 guage shotguns that I've ever seen or heard of that have six digit serial numbers located on the bottom of the receiver have been very early guns; I think some of them and maybe all of them that I've seen were made even before the gun was called the Model 11. (From 1905 until 1911 the Browning patent automatic shotgun that Remington made was simply called the Remington Autoloading Shotgun. It didn't become the Model 11 until 1911.) All of the very early guns like this that I've seen do not have the flying duck and flying pheasant rollmarks on the receiver like the later Model 11's have, and they do not have Model 11 rollmarked onto the breechbolt like the later Model 11's do. The barrels of all the real early ones that I've seen have been plain to the point that nobody has been able to tell if they were actually original to the gun, or were added to the gun later, because none identified Remington as the manufacturer. In fact, the real early Remington autoloaders that I've seen have often been confused with early Browning A-5's because they did not say Remington on the barrel. Why not post a few pictures of your gun showing all these features? I'd sure like to see it. I love the old Remingtons humpbacks, regardless whether they are pre-model 11s or are Model 11s.

This Remington Model 11, 12 gauge semi automatic shotgun is original and correct as issued for World War II, minus the barrel. Serial numbers match on receiver, tang, trigger assembly, and stock (As far as I know all barrels should be marked with a US and Ordnance bomb as well as serial number, this examples is not marked with either - Click. Please note that many rifles, particularly 22s, did not have serial numbers prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act. Remington added serial numbers in 1967 staring with 400,000. Since year codes are often duplicated, a code letter on a gun with a serial number would be later than 1967 while one without a serial number would be a year prior to 1967.
